As the price of gas continues to rise and our reliance on it becomes greater a small group of people have begun making biodiesel fuel at home as a way to free them selves of the energy crunch that is looming on the horizon.
The nice thing about a biodiesel processor is that it is relatively small, meaning you can set one up in a shed or under an awning in your backyard. Biodiesel holds the promise of being used as a cheaper alternative heating fuel for domestic and commercial boilers. Biodiesel is defined as mono-alkyl esters of long chain fatty acids derived from vegetable oils or animal fats which conform to specifications for use in diesel engines.
Biodiesel use results in a significantly reduced emission of carbon monoxide. There are kits available to convert diesel engines that have problems with burning biodiesel. Animal fats like tallow and lard are also being used as a raw material for biodiesel production.
